People ask how we have such wonderful music for the film so this is the story of how I met these musicians Don and Tonya. I was in a documentary workshop at TF2009 that Don and Tonya happen to be at and I was taking pictures and notes of the speaker that was just about to publish a book on documentary and indie filmmaking called Think Outside The Box Office by Jon Reiss. (A must read!)
Well they seemed happy to be there and friendly enough so we struck up a conversation about the workshop and the next speaker and found out they have a recording studio in Nashville and somewhere in Maine! Well we hit it off, had a few drinks and some food at Tellers in downtown Columbia. I think this was when we had a post- production grant in the works. We had spent months capturing footage and I actually was set on another composer but we didn’t really have the funds and I was worried about the long distance and the money. So months later when the film was edited in a rough cut I called or emailed Don and he told me again he could work with me on what I needed. Well, I picked out some tunes I liked and Don tried to guide me and we were actually set on using another song for the epilogue. Turns out Don’s song Tilt-A-Whirl would be “the” song that tied it all together. He has beautiful guitar playing and his voice is sincere. All of the music on the documentary is Don’s, so I owe Don my gratitude for hanging in there with me when I was putting all this together. In the future I am going to write about how we worked long distance, texting and emailing and editing. Fun!
